CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Members of the Virginia track and field program wrapped up fall training competing in the fifth-annual team pentathlon Sunday afternoon (Nov. 20).

On the men’s side, the Orange team won a close battle against the Blue team, 280.7-261.4, while on the women’s side, the Blue team was victorious, 190.4-181.4.

Senior Tori McKenzie won her fourth-consecutive overall women’s title with 290 points (284 in 2014, 279 in 2013, 300 in 2015). McKenzie captured events wins in the standing triple jump (7.97m), 30-meter dash (4.29) and the between the legs forward shot throw (15.99m – new senior class record). Senior Christine Bohan set a new competition record in the overhead backward shot throw (17.31m) and senior Chimere Ezumah won the standing long jump (2.71m).

On the men’s side, freshman Jordan Scott won the overall title with 341 points after winning the standing triple jump (9.89m), the standing long jump (3.31m) and the 30-meter dash (4.00). Scott’s standing long jump, standing triple jump and overall score were UVA freshman records. Junior Anthony Bouselli won the between the legs forward shot throw (15.63m) and sophomore Hilmar Jonsson captured the overhead backward shot throw (17.56m).

"It has become an annual event for us prior to the Thanksgiving break,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “It is a way to evaluate the progress of fall training and get the competitive juices flowing prior to the start of the season. The most important part is it should be fun and a way to bring all the speed and power-event groups together."

The annual pentathlon is held the week before Thanksgiving each fall, pitting the program’s sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers against one another in a competition boasting five events, including the 30-meter dash, standing long jump, standing triple jump, between the legs forward shot throw and overhead backward shot throw.

The student-athletes compete for themselves as well as for one of two teams, Blue and Orange. Competitors are ‘drafted’ in a side and compete for that squad until leaving Grounds. New student-athletes are drafted by the upperclassmen on the current teams with the losing team from the year before having the first pick.
