ZAGREB, Croatia - Virginia track and field assistant coach Martin Maric was honored as one of the Croatia Athletes of the Year for 2012 as his native country honored its top track and field performers of the year on Tuesday. Maric shared the male athlete of the year award with Nedzad Mulabegovic, while Sandra Perkovic was the nation's top female athlete.

Maric, who joined the Cavalier staff in September as the program's throws coach, is a two-time Olympian. This summer he finished 17th in the discus at the London Olympics. He finished 29th at the event in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics. A graduate of the University of California, he was the 2009 NCAA Champion in the discus.

This is the first time Maric has been honored as Croatian Athlete of the Year.
