During the fall, you don’t have any events to compete in. What type of training do you do during that time to get ready for the spring?
Williams: We are working on a lot of power building. We do a lot of work in the weight room to get stronger and power exercises on the track. That training is designed to allow us to run fast, jump far or throw far when it is time for us to compete in the spring.
What sort of progress have you seen as a result of that training?
Williams: You can definitely tell that you are improving. Every day you see the progression. We put in 110 percent into every workout. Whether we are doing strength or endurance, we have certain goals that we are working towards. From the first (day of practice) until now you can see how much better everyone has gotten.
Right now you are getting set for the start of the indoor season in January, is there any difference to preparing for the indoor season than the outdoor season?
Williams: In indoor, you have to start by building the endurance. It is really the start of our season, so you are trying to begin on a good note and lay the foundation for the (entire) season. There isn’t as much of that when you start the outdoor season since you are coming off the end of the indoor season just before it.
As you prepare to start your senior season, what have been the highlights for you over your first three years?
Williams: Last year, when I broke the indoor school record in the 200, that was a highlight. It was an incredible accomplishment because I worked so hard for it. It was a little unexpected, but I was definitely excited when I found out that I broke the record.
You mention breaking the 200-meter record last indoor season. Does that give you a lot of confidence heading into this season?
Williams: It definitely does. It was a great way to complete my indoor season last year and it gave me a lot of momentum heading into the outdoor season. Now that indoor season is coming up again, I am excited to see what kind of times I can put up this year.
As you enter your final year, what are the goals you have for yourself and the team this spring?
One of my goals is to have a strong season to help my team be successful. We want to be competitive within the conference. Right now, I just want to run fast. I am not putting up any specific goals, but I know that will accomplish that one goal: I will run fast this season.
