2015 UVa Track & Field Preview - Women's Distance

Maria Hauger

Dec. 29, 2014

THREE THINGS TO KNOW...

1. A Young, But Talented Group - The women's distance runners will once again be one of the youngest groups for the Cavaliers this spring, but have the potential for a lot of success. Four Cavaliers who were selected to compete in last year's NCAA East Preliminary Rounds return for their sophomore seasons. That group includes Jen Flack, Sarah Fakler and Maria Hauger, who posted the three best freshman times in school history in the 10000m last spring.

2. Flack and Hauger Expected to Return Outdoors - Jen Flack and Maria Hauger both missed the cross country season due to injury. Both are expected to sit out the indoor season and return for the outdoor season. Flack reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year in the 10000m, while Hauger set the school freshman record in the indoor 3000m in 2014.

3. Grad Student Transfers Expected to Contribute - Iona Lake and Morgan Kelly joined the program this year as graduate student transfers and were the team's top two finishers at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Kelly, who came to UVa from Harvard, will compete during the indoor season, having already exhausted her outdoor eligibility. Lake, who came to UVa from the University of Birmingham in England, will run indoors for the first time in her career before the experienced steeplechase runner will have a chance to shine in that event during the outdoor season.
