Tyler Cannon Named Student Assistant Coach

Former Cavalier shortstop returns to Cavalier program as student coach

Tyler Cannon in in his first season as a student assistant coach for the Virginia baseball program.

Cannon played for the Cavaliers from 2007-10 and will finish his bachelor's degree while working with the Cavalier program.

Cannon was a four-year letterwinner during his Virginia playing career. He was a starter on four NCAA tournament teams and was the shortstop on Virginia's 2009 team which won the ACC championship and advanced to the program's first College World Series. Cannon was named to the 2009 All-College World Series Team.

Cannon played in a school-record 244 games (238 starts) during his Virginia career. He was a .303 career hitter with 276 hits, which is tied for second most in program history. He holds school records with 62 doubles and 910 at bats and also ranks third in program history in triples (12) and runs (185), fifth in total bases (380) and eighth in stolen bases (49) and walks (107).

Cannon twice was drafted by professional organizations. He was a 41st-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, then returned for his senior year and was selected in the 12th round of the 2010 draft by the Cleveland Indians. He played three seasons in the Indians farm system, reaching the double-A level in 2011, and retired prior to the 2013 season.
