CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Pat McAnaney struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings while freshman second baseman David Adams went 3-for-5 with three RBI at the plate as Virginia defeated Dayton, 10-3, Wednesday evening in nonconference baseball action at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium. Greg Miclat, Brandon Marsh, Mike Campagna and Tim Henry each had a pair of hits for the Cavaliers (16-4), who out-hit Dayton, 11-6.
"This was a nice way to start off a big week for us," UVa head coach Brian O'Connor said. "With this weekend's home ACC series looming, it would have been easy to have a letdown, but our guys took care of business. Pat (McAnaney) had a good performance, and our hitters backed him up by producing runs. We're going to carry this momentum over into the weekend in getting ready for a nationally ranked Clemson team. I know our fans are ready for it, and are going to create a great college baseball environment."
McAnaney held the Flyers (7-7) to two earned runs on five hits before giving way to Michael Schwimer, who struck out three in 1 1/3 innings. Shooter Hunt and Andrew Carraway pitched the final two innings and combined for three strikeouts as UVa pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts in the game and held the Flyers to six hits.
Bobby Getty led Dayton at the plate going 2-for-4. Sean Finn took the loss allowing three runs in two innings on four hits.
The Cavaliers capitalized on three Dayton errors, which led to five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Miclat led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second when Marsh reached first base on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With bases loaded and no outs, Adams drove in two runs putting UVa ahead, 6-3. Ryan Hudson drew a bases loaded walk to make it, 7-3, before Campagna reached on a fielder's choice to score the eighth run of the game. Henry's two-run single made it, 10-3.
Dayton had a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. After McAnaney had struck out five consecutive batters, Bobby Getty singled to third base. William Benoit walked giving the Flyers two baserunners. Bryan Chandler then doubled down the right field line pulling Dayton within, 4-3.
Virginia broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth with three runs with two outs to go ahead, 4-1. Brandon Guyer scored on a wild pitch to put the Hoos ahead, 2-1. Campagna followed with a single up the middle and scored on Tim Henry's double to right center pushing UVa on top, 3-1. Miclat doubled in Henry for the three-run UVa lead.
Adams' triple to the right field wall scored Miclat in the bottom of the first inning giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. The Flyers tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second when Bryan Chandler scored on a wild pitch.
Virginia will host No. 2 Clemson this weekend for its first Atlantic Coast Conference home series. Friday's game is slated to start at 5 p.m. while the games Saturday and Sunday have a 1 p.m. first-pitch.
