VIRGINIA HEAD COACH Brian O'Connor
Overall thoughts on the game...
"Obviously, it's great to win the first game of the tournament. We are very excited about being here and today started things off right for us. NC State has beaten us two out of the times earlier this season and I knew it was going to be a tough fought ball game, which is why I choose to start Jacob (Thompson). Every time we've asked him to go out there and start on a tough Friday night, those are the kinds of outings that he has had every time."
On getting the game started...
"The first half of the game was a bit frustrating because we had opportunities to score and just couldn't get the big hit, but I was proud of the way our guys hung in there and were fortunate enough to get a six-run inning. Thanks to Jacob, he gave us eight great innings of work in order to save our ball club for the rest of the week. In a tournament like this, that is a really important part."
On tomorrow's game against Georgia Tech...
"It is the oldest cliché in coaching, but tomorrow is just another game. I really believe that you have to take care of business one at a time. You cannot focus on what it takes to win the championship, because we all know that it takes winning tomorrow. Georgia Tech has a very good team and we have had two tough games against them earlier this season."
VIRGINIA RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER Jacob Thompson
On throwing eight solid innings...
"I really didn't feel that great early on. I wasn't putting hitters away and I felt that they were hitting everything that I threw to them for the first two or three innings. Once I got settled in and got angry with myself then I finally found a groove. The wind helped me a lot today. I was just concentrating on throwing strikes."
NC STATE HEAD COACH ELLIOTT AVENT
Overall thoughts on the game...
"I'm once again happy to be in Jacksonville for the tournament. The chamber of commerce and everybody has been behind this thing to make us feel welcome. This is the most welcome we've felt in my 11 years here at any place we've ever been and we appreciate that. Good ball game today between two good baseball teams, unfortunately one team had to lose. They had a lot better sixth inning than we did and that was the difference."
NC STATE THIRD BASEMAN RAMON CORONA
On Virginia starting pitcher Jacob Thompson...
"Like coach said, he's a consistent pitcher that has command over two pitches. I just tried to do my best to square something up and hit a line drive. I snuck those two down the line and that started me off."
NC STATE CATCHER CALEB MANGUM
On the emotions the team has gone through in the last week...
"This team has gone through a lot in the last few weeks. We've gone through a lot all season, but it hasn't been as publicly known as now. We've really come through the last weeks in wins over Virginia and taking care of business against Clemson. Today we just faced a good pitcher and they had a big inning. Who knows, if they don't have that big inning, we're still on a roll. Hopefully we will use this as motivation and not get complacent."
