CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia baseball team continues its homestand at 3 p.m. Wednesday when it matches up against George Washington at Davenport Field. Please note the game date change from the original schedule; the contest was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday because of a forecast for inclement weather.
The $2 Tuesdays concessions promotion will be honored at the Wednesday game. $2 sodas and hot dogs will be available at the concessions stands. Parking for the contest will be available in the University Hall and John Paul Jones Arena lots.
A live audio broadcast will be available with a Cavaliers Live subscription on VirginiaSports.com. Live statistics also will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Freshman RHP Trey Oest (Dover, Fla.) is scheduled to make his second midweek start in a row for the Cavaliers, while LHP Max Kaplow (0-1, 6.00 ERA) will get the starting nod on the mound for GW. Oest worked six scoreless innings in his college debut last Monday against Saint Peter's.
Ranked as high as 19th nationally this week, Virginia has started the season 7-0 after sweeping Toledo in a 3-game home series last weekend. UVa is 7-0 for the first time since the 2009 season. The Cavaliers' bats have been hot early this season, as Virginia has a .323 team batting average and six regulars are hitting .333 or better. Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) boasts a team-best .455 batting average.
Virginia's pitching staff has compiled a 2.14 team ERA. The starting pitchers have strung together 29 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, including five straight scoreless starts.
George Washington has started slow out of the gates, losing its first five games, including a 3-game series sweep at USC Upstate this past weekend. The Colonials have scuffled at the plate, batting .185 with four extra-base hits, but Tyler McCarthy has been the team's top hitter thus far with a .313 batting average. GW also owns a 6.00 team ERA.
Virginia is 20-13 in its all-time series with George Washington. The Cavaliers have won four straight against the Colonials, including a 16-4 win on April 11, 2012, at Davenport Field.
The Cavaliers are home this weekend for a round robin tournament with Bucknell and Harvard. All three teams will play four games. UVa will play Harvard at 4 p.m. Friday, Bucknell at noon Saturday, Harvard at 3 p.m. Saturday and Bucknell at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Bison and Crimson will play at noon Friday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
