CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The top-ranked Virginia baseball team will finish the regular season this weekend with a three-game ACC series against Miami at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla. The teams will play at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and noon Saturday.
The Friday game will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast and also will be picked up locally in the Virginia area by Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
Virginia (43-9, 21-6 ACC) needs one win this weekend to clinch its first ACC Coastal Division championship as well as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship, which is scheduled to start next Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C.
Winners of 14 straight games, the Cavaliers are currently riding the second-longest win streak in school history. The record of 19 straight victories was set to start the 2009 season. UVa also won 14 games in a row during the 2004 season.
Something has to give, though, as Miami is on a nation's best 16-game home win streak. The Cavaliers have won six straight road games. The series features the ACC's top two pitching staffs - UVa has a league-best 3.50 ERA, while Miami closely follows at 3.59.
The Cavaliers are coming off a stellar weekend against then-No. 21 North Carolina, as UVa swept the three-game series. It marked Virginia's first-ever three-game series sweep of the Tar Heels and also was UVa's third straight conference series sweep. The Cavaliers also swept a series right after their exam break for just the second time ever (1997 vs. Maryland).
UVa was slated to face VMI Tuesday but the game was cancelled because of poor playing conditions.
The Cavaliers remain No. 1 in the ACC in team batting (.341). Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks second in the conference in batting with a .386 mark and is second in hits with 81.
Miami (38-13, 19-8 ACC) defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 5-4, at home Tuesday night. The Hurricanes dropped two of three games at Georgia Tech last weekend. Catcher Yasmani Grandal leads the team with an ACC-best .432 batting average. He also has hit 13 home runs and driven in 54 runs. Harold Martinez has hit 17 home runs and driven in 52 runs this year. Miami is batting .301 as a team.
