CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia's Joe McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) has been named to the first team of the 2013 Baseball America Freshman All-America Team, announced Monday by Baseball America. McCarthy is the fifth Cavalier to be honored as a Baseball America Freshman All-American and the first since Danny Hultzen in 2009.

McCarthy also was honored on the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger and NCBWA Freshman All-America teams and was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Year. He was a Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2013.

McCarthy finished third on the team with a .336 batting average and ranked second with a .469 on base percentage. He recorded the highest batting average for a Virginia freshman since Bill Narleski batted .366 in 1984 (minimum 2.0 at bats per game).

He racked up 75 hits, including four home runs, and drove in 51 runs in 60 games. McCarthy reached base safely in 56 games and ranked fifth among all freshmen nationally in on base percentage. He tied a school record with 54 walks, ranking fourth in the ACC and sixth nationally in that category.

He played some of his best baseball in UVa's biggest games. McCarthy posted a .357 batting average in ACC play, ranking seventh among all league players. He batted a team-best .438 (7-for-16) in NCAA tournament play and was named to the NCAA Charlottesville Regional All-Tournament Team.
