CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.) had three hits and drove in six runs to lead the Blue team to an 8-0 win over the Orange Wednesday night in the opening game of the Virginia baseball team's annual Orange and Blue World Series at Davenport Field.
The Blue grabbed the upper hand in the first series. There will be two 2-game series (Games 1-2 and Games 3-4 are separate series) as well as a Game 5. If a given team wins both games of either series, the other series automatically becomes a series that is based on run differential, provided it's a split series, to allow the trailing team to still win a series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running the score up.
Irving went 3-for-5 with two runs and six RBI to lead a 10-hit night for the Blue. Mike Papi (So., Tunkhannock, Pa.) singled in all three of his at bats for the Orange, while Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) added a pair of hits in a losing cause.
The teams played five scoreless innings before the Blue broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth. Kenny Towns (So., Burke, Va.) and Colin Harrington (R-Jr., Johnstown, Pa.) drew back-to-back walks from Kevin Doherty (Fr., Laytonsville, Md.) to start the inning, and Irving followed with a blast that carried into the left-field bleachers.
The Blue tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh. Reed Gragnani (Sr., Richmond, Va.) tripled to right-center to lead off the inning. One out later, Derek Fisher (So., Rexmont, Pa.) walked and Harrington was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Irving stepped up and delivered a two-run single down the left-field line to push the lead to 5-0.
The Blue squad blew the game open in the ninth, getting an RBI double from Irving before Rob Amaro (R-Jr., Bensalem, Pa.) hit a towering home run into the bleachers in left-center field.
The Blue team's pitching also was impressive, with freshmen Trey Oest (Dover, Fla.), David Rosenberger (Bethlahem, Pa.), Josh Sborz (McLean, Va.) and Nathan Kirby (Midlothian, Va.) combining to allow seven singles and three walks. Rosenberger was credited with the win after tossing three innings of relief, while Doherty took the loss for the Orange.
Game 2 of the series is slated for 6 p.m. Monday.
