Virginia Head Coach Dave Leitao

On the win...
"We're very pleased and happy after losing three games in a row. We were helped a little bit by the home crowd--just to get energy back. We had a terrific practice yesterday and a very good shoot-around today. We had an air of confidence about what was going to happen today; I told them that before the game."

On being aggressive...
"We've got to be able to enjoy this and know that we're capable. We've done it a number of times this year. This was the best defensive team in the league, and when we put 103 points on the board against them, we're in that mindset. When we're aggressive on both ends, there are a lot of things that we can do. But we've got to figure out the other side of it. When we're not on top of our game--when we don't get the positive contributions, like what Jason [Cain] gave us today, we can figure out a way to still win basketball games. It remains a work in progress."

On Mamadi Diane...
"Throughout the year and a half that he's been here, he's been very good at home. Today he was extra aggressive, and as a result, extra special. He made his open shots, he rebounded and played really good defense on different guys. He guarded point guards, he guarded Jones, and was all around a very good player for us today."

On defense...
"This is the fourth game in a row where we've faced not one, but two or three really good offensive post players. I'd like to see our interior defense get better. We're not shot-blocking, and we don't have size, so we can't really get in front of people the way a lot of other people are doing. We've got to do it with two or three or four guys, or stunting, and occasionally doubling...those kinds of things. In the first half there were occasions where we forced them to take off-balance shots. That's what we've got to do. That's what any good team has got to do on the inside and we've got to get better at it."

On Jason Cain...
"It was critical that he stay out of foul trouble. It was critical that he was active. He was practicing jump shots when I came into the office today. When he made that first [jump shot], I pointed at him. He nodded back and understood that I wanted him to keep playing like that. I implored him to let it all hang out--let his talent show. I think he did that today, with a lot more defense and rebounding."

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams

William's comments on the game...
"In the game our defense wasn't good enough to stop Virginia, and they got a big lead; I guess they had it out to 20. I like the way we came back but it takes a lot out of you and, we were gambling a little bit with fouls and things like that towards the end of the first half. We paid for it a little bit. We put them on the line too many times. You have a team shoot 49 free throws, save the last eight we probably gave them because we had to foul. That is still 43 free throws and that is a lot of free throws to give to a team. They are a good free throw shooting team with the right guys on the line who made their free throws. The whole thing was the way we started the game, just getting behind and that's what caused our problems."

On the press...
"We had to in the first half. We're down 20 and we got it to 7 at halftime. That was all the press; that's all that was. They hurt us in the second half but we had our chances. We didn't convert. I thought the offense after we got the ball in the second half wasn't good enough. We had our chances to score and we didn't score. There were three straight possessions where we turned it over. When you're down eight or nine, that really costs us."

On going into the locker room after a 13-0 run to end the first-half...
"I thought we could win the game. I think the players did too at halftime. We didn't play much better at the start of the second half. Virginia just didn't score as easy against the zone at the start of the second half as they did against our man-to-man early. So it kept us around for a while. We had some shots that we didn't put down; we turned it over some and that's what cost us. I thought defensively early on in the first half and then our offense in the second half, we just couldn't score when we had to."

On being in foul trouble...
"We were gambling. We had a lot of guys out there with four and the problem with that is sometimes guys don't play hard because they're worried about getting their fifth. That happened in a few plays when you can take charges where it might be a block charge. We had to gamble so I didn't mind that. It affected us, but we did what we had to do."

On Virginia's Mamadi Diane...
"He looks like a good shooter. He really does. He's got a great release. He gets up well on his jump shot. Shooters go through slumps, and I think he's been in a slump. He didn't shoot well the last couple of games but it's there. Unfortunately, he came out of his slump tonight."

On Virginia's Jamil Tucker...
"We know he's a good shooter; he made a couple which hurt us. We had looks and somebody's going to score. We gave up 100 because we didn't play very well in the first half defensively and then the second half we were gambling. That's why they got 100."

On Virginia's Sean Singletary...
"I've always felt that his ability to get inside is big. He's a good three-point shooter but his ability to get into the paint is probably what makes him a great player. He catches you when you have to help on him and his ability to get by his man forced us to help. They got a couple of easy lay-ups because of that and that really hurt us."

On Maryland's defense...
"I thought we weren't playing good man-to-man so it didn't feel bad going to zone. So I was hoping the zone couldn't be any worse. The zone helped us get back a little bit but they kept some guys on the court for a longer period of time."

On Maryland's rebounding...
"In the ACC this year, you have to play well every night. It's one of those things where we rebounded pretty well against Clemson but we didn't rebound well against Miami. So here it is tonight and Virginia got us pretty good on the glass. It was probably significant because we shot the ball pretty well but they did get some second shots. If you've got the lead like Virginia did tonight, when they're able to get the ball back, that really hurt us because that's time you don't have to go down and score. It's thirty seconds later by the time you get it to go down and score and that really hurt us."

On coming back from tonight's loss...
"You have to have confidence that you can play. We play five of our first eight on the road so we're on a tough stretch with our schedule. We go to Virginia Tech next; they're obviously a very good basketball team just like Virginia. We have to be at the top of our game to win games on the road just like everybody else in the league."

On Virginia's Jason Cain...
"I like him a lot. I think he works. That's why he's in there. I don't think any player in the league brings more effort to the game than Cain. He's improved; he puts the ball on the floor a little bit this year. He made a jump shot earlier; it was a nice shot we didn't expect him to make. He just keeps playing. I've got a few guys like that; you just put them out there and they're going to play as hard as they can for as long as they can. When you know what's coming from a guy like that then that's taken care of; you know you're going to get that from him and you can worry about the other people. That's why Cain is so valuable to the team because I don't see every game Virginia plays, but the games I've seen them play, I've never seen him lack effort when he's on the court."

Virginia Player Quotes

#2 Senior G J.R. Reynolds

On the win...
"It's a big win for us. We needed it."

On Maryland's First half run...
"We just wanted to be poised. We just had to be poised under pressure."

On Maryland's pressure...
"They have the number one defense in the ACC. They bring a whole lot of pressure. "They have great athletic players from one to five on the court so we just had to be poised with it."

On the home wins...
"I just think we're more aggressive at home. More relaxed more comfortable at home."

On Jamil Tucker's play...
He came off the bench and hit a couple three-pointers for us and gave us a boost off the bench."

On the team effort in the game...
"Everybody contributed. Everybody was just in the mix of things and had each others back."

#33 Junior F Jason Cain

On the win over Maryland...
"I noticed one time in the shower, damn we never beat Maryland."

On his role in the game...
"I really tried to focus on just staying out of foul trouble. It's been a while since I haven't been in foul trouble. I just tried to offensively be aggressive to start the game just to loosen things up for everybody else."

On the past few games...
"I just felt I caught a couple bad breaks on fouls the last couple games. When I came in ready it just knocked me out of sync so I really just couldn't get back on track like I wanted to."

On the whole team contributing to the win...
"It's very important. Big teams try to focus on Sean and J.R. just because they're great players and it was good to see Mo and Jamil and everybody else step up the way we need to."

On the win...
"The big men [Maryland's] there get so much respect for everything they do for their team. And we sat back and talked and we really don't get any respect because people think we aren't that good. But today we tried to prove we could play too."

On what he did to get so many double-doubles; i.e. consistency...
"Stay in the game. Stay out of foul trouble. Just stay aggressive. Just stay aggressive defensively and stay aggressive offensively. Just feed off of what Sean and J.R. do and hopefully just get some open looks."

Maryland Player Quotes

#21 Freshman G Greivis Vasquez

On his thoughts of tonight's loss...
"I think we made a lot of mistakes. We just have to keep working. We have another game on Sunday, and we've got to get ready for that. You have to give them credit, they played hard - they played harder than us, and they got the win."

On his role in the team's comeback attempt late in the game...
"I came in there and I put the game on myself. In this league it's too hard. As a freshman, I'm learning that it's hard to play by yourself. I'm so passionate that I just want to win every time. We had a chance to win the game tonight and I was hot, but that's not how you win. I have to listen to Coach and follow whatever he says."

#15 Junior F James Gist

On how the team will transition from the loss...
"We just need to look forward to Virginia Tech. Virginia is over so we can't do much about that. We need to come back to practice on Thursday and get ready to play Virginia Tech."

On if he thinks the team is in a current slump and how that will affect the coming road stretch...
"I don't think it's a big slump at all. We've been in this position the last two years. I think we're a lot better than the last two years, so we just have to come out and play hard against Virginia Tech."

On the team's feeling at the start of the second half...
"There was a sense of urgency. We were back in the game, and we had done what we needed to do. It just didn't work out."

On the team's foul trouble...
"Some games you're going to have that. Some people will have foul trouble and we have to depend on the bench to keep it up so we can get those players back in the game."
