Virginia Basketball Announces Games on European Tour

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's basketball team has announced its game schedule for its trip to Europe next month. The Cavaliers will play five games when they visit The Netherlands, Belgium and France from August 6-16.

The Cavaliers open the trip in Amsterdam where they will play two games against the Netherlands B team. Both games (Aug. 8 and 9) will start at 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) at the Sporthalzuid.

Virginia will travel to Belgium to play club team Gembo on Aug. 11 at 7:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. ET) at the Sporthal Luisbekelaar in the Antwerp suburb of Borgerhout.

The Cavaliers conclude the trip in Paris where they will play two games against AMW Team France, a squad selected from players on rosters throughout the French League. The games on Aug. 13 and 14 will both start at 7 p.m. (1 p.m. ET) at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.

Virginia's roster for the trip will include eight veterans from last year's team (Darion Atkins, Malcolm Brogdon, Doug Browman, Jontel Evans, Joe Harris, Paul Jesperson, Akil Mitchell and Thomas Rogers) and seven newcomers (Justin Anderson, Taylor Barnette, Teven Jones, Caid Kirven, Justin Miller, Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey). Brogdon, who missed the end of the 2011-12 season due to injury, will travel with the team to Europe but will not play in the games as he continues his rehabilitation. Anthony Gill, who transferred to Virginia from South Carolina this year, is not eligible to play in 2012-13 due to NCAA transfer rules and will not travel with the team on the European Tour.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for our program to take this trip to Europe," said head coach Tony Bennett. "There are so many benefits to having an international trip. First, it is an opportunity to have extra practices and play games against quality competition, which is especially helpful for a team with a lot of new faces. Second, it is an opportunity for all of us to bond together and experience different cultures and learn about other parts of the world. And third, it is always great to be able to showcase the University of Virginia to an international audience."

It is the Cavaliers' third trip to Europe since 1996. They compiled a 3-3 record on a trip to Belgium and France in August of 1996 and were 5-1 on a trip to Germany, Belgium and France in August of 2000.
