Virginia announced Thursday (Aug. 22) it will play 31 regular-season games, including 17 home contests at John Paul Jones Arena, during the 2013-14 men's basketball season.
Times and television designations are set for 25 of Virginia's 31 games. The league will announce game times and television designations for Virginia's six remaining non-conference opponents in September.
The Cavaliers' schedule is highlighted by 13 games against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams, home games against North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse, VCU and Wisconsin, and road contests at Duke, Notre Dame and Tennessee. Virginia will also play four games as part of the Corpus Christi Challenge in November.
Virginia will face each of the 14 conference opponents, including newcomers Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, during its 18-game league schedule.
The Cavaliers will play four schools home-and-away (Florida State, Maryland, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech), five schools only at home (Boston College, Miami, North Carolina, Syracuse and Wake Forest) and five schools only on the road (Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, NC State and Pittsburgh).
Virginia hosts Wisconsin, VCU, James Madison, Northern Iowa, Navy, Liberty, Hampton and Norfolk State in non-conference action. The Cavaliers travel to Tennessee, and Green Bay, and play Davidson in Charlotte, N.C. In addition, Virginia plays SMU and either Texas A&M or Missouri State at the Corpus Christi Challenge in Texas.
Virginia's games against Duke (Jan. 13), North Carolina (Jan. 20) and Maryland (Feb. 10) will be featured on ESPN's ACC Big Monday. The Cavaliers' last regular-season game at Maryland (March 9) will be televised on CBS. Virginia will play an additional 12 games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Virginia returns its top five scorers, including All-ACC performers Joe Harris
(Chelan, Wash.) and Akil Mitchell
(Charlotte, N.C.), from last year's squad that posted a 23-12 record. The Cavaliers led the ACC in scoring defense last season and increased the number of wins for the fourth consecutive season under head coach Tony Bennett
