One of the greatest players in UVa football history, Anthony Poindexter is in his third season as running backs coach. This year he also adds the duties of assistant special teams coordinator to his workload. Poindexter started his UVa coaching career as a graduate assistant on offense in 2003. He returned to his alma mater the year before as a graduate assistant coach for strength and conditioning.
Last fall, Poindexter guided the Cavaliers to 1,608 yards of rushing and 18 touchdowns, led by senior Wali Lundy's eight touchdowns. Hampered by an injury early in the season, Lundy rebounded to rush for a career-high 113 yards against Temple. In the upset of No. 24 Georgia Tech, Lundy became UVa's all-time career TD leader. He is also only the third player in ACC history to score 50 career touchdowns.
In 2004, Poindexter helped the Cavaliers to the second greatest improvement in rushing average (112.6) in ACC history. UVa's rushing improvement was second best in the nation. The Cavaliers scored a school record 34 rushing touchdowns, led by tailback Wali Lundy's 17 trips to the end zone. All-ACC tailback Alvin Pearman came on late in the season to become the ACC's second-leading rusher. He earned first-team All-ACC honors for the first time after leading the conference with five 100-yard games. Both Lundy and Pearman rank in the top 10 in rushing in school history.
Regarded as one of the fiercest hitters in the game during his collegiate career (1994-98), Poindexter earned first-team All-America honors at safety his junior and senior seasons. He also was chosen the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and is one of only three players in school history to earn first-team All-ACC recognition three times.
He finished his career with 342 career tackles, the ninth-most in school history and tops among ACC defensive backs. He is tied for fifth in school history with 12 interceptions.
As a freshman, Poindexter helped make perhaps the biggest single defensive play in school history when he and teammate Adrian Burnim stopped Florida State tailback Warrick Dunn inches from the goal line, on the game's last play, to preserve a 33-28 win over the second-ranked Seminoles. With the victory, Virginia ended FSU's four-year, 29-game conference winning streak since joining the league in 1992.
Unfortunately, Poindexter's senior season ended prematurely when he injured his left knee in the seventh game of the season and later underwent reconstructive surgery.
Poindexter was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL draft. He spent two seasons with the Ravens before ending his pro career with the Cleveland Browns.
