Virginia vs. Maryland Game Notes
Virginia wore an all blue uniform for today's game vs. Maryland. It is believed to be the first time the Cavaliers have donned an all blue uniform.
Today's game marked the first home start for UVa quarterback Jameel Sewell. A redshirt freshman, Sewell's first three starts came on the road at Georgia Tech, Duke and East Carolina.
UVa freshman wide receiver Staton Jobe (22) accompanied the Cavalier captains for the coin toss of today's game. Jobe was given the honor by the UVa coaches as the scout team player of the week for the East Carolina game. UVa senior captain Christian Olsen gives up his spot for the pregame ceremony to allow the scout team player of the week to participate. NCAA rules limit each team to just four players during the coin toss.
Virginia started junior Keenan Carter at nose tackle for today's game. It was just the second start during his career. He started in 2005 vs. Georgia Tech. Allen Billyk had started the first six games of the season at nose tackle for UVa.
Today's game marks the third time this season the Cavaliers held an opponent with a touchdown in the first half and it marks the second time this year they have held the opponent scoreless (also Duke). Wyoming scored just three points in the first half in its game at Scott Stadium.
Prior to today's game Virginia's longest play of the season was a 34-yard pass from Kevin McCabe to Tom Santi vs. Western Michigan. In the first half the Cavaliers had four plays of longer distance:
In the first quarter, Jameel Sewell ran 36 yards for a TD.
In the first quarter, Marcus Hamilton returned an interception 58 yards.
In the second quarter, Sewell hooked up with Kevin Ogletree for a 38-yard TD pass.
In the second quarter, Swell threw a 51-yard pass to Ogletree.
Jameel Sewell's 36-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the longest by a UVa player this year. The previous high was a 29-yard carry by Jason Snellling at East Carolina. Sewell's previous long rush was an 18-yard carry at East Carolina.
Sewell's 51-yard pass to Kevin Ogletree was the longest in the redshirt freshman quarterback's career. Coming into today's game, Sewell's longest pass was a 20-yard throw to Jason Snelling last week at East Carolina. Sewell's 44-yard TD pass to Kevin Ogletree was the longest touchdown pass of his career. He also threw a 38-yard TD pass to Ogletree in the first half.
Ogletree's 51-yard catch in the second quarter was the longest in his career. He followed that up with a 44-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter, bettering the 38-yard reception he had earlier in the game. Prior to today, Ogletree's long reception was a 25-yard TD pass on the first play of overtime in UVa's 13-12 victory against Wyoming. Ogletree had his fourth TD catch this season.
Virginia cornerback Marcus Hamilton recorded the 14th interception of his career in today's game. It was his fourth this season. The 58-yard return by Hamilton was the longest of his career and was longer than the other 13 interception returns combined. Entering today's game, Hamilton had 14 interceptions totaling 55 yards. It was the longest interception return by a Cavalier since Muffin Curry returned an interception 58 yards vs. Virginia Tech in 2003. Hamilton entered Saturday's game second in the nation in career interceptions, trailing only Utah's Eric Weddle who had 17. Sabby Piscitelli of Oregon State and John Talley of Duke also entered Saturday's action with 13 career picks.
Chris Gould's 50-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter was the longest try in his career. His long FG was from 48 yards.
Sophomore safety Byron Glaspy recorded his first career sack today.
Fontel Mines extended his consecutive streak of catching a pass to 18 games today. That is the longest streak of any current UVa player.
Keon Lattimore's 56-yard touchdown run by Maryland in the fourth quarter equaled the longest run surrendered by the UVa defense this season. Mark Bonds of Western Michigan carried the ball the same distance earlier in the season. It was Lattimore's longest rush of the season.
Erin Henderson's 45-yard interception return for a score was the 10th longest INT return for a TD against a Cavalier team. It was his first interception this season, the first INT for a TD this year by the Terrapins and the longest runback by a Terp player this year. It is also the first time ever that Virginia has had four interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season.
Sewell threw for a career-high 243 yards (13-for-21) and rushed for a career-high 92 yards on 10 carries. He accounted for three touchdowns (1 Rush, 2 Pass) and 335 yards. It was the first time he threw for two touchdowns in a game.
Ogletree ended with a career-high 133 receiving yards and two touchdowns. It was also his first two-TD reception game of his career.
The 424 yards of total offense gained by Virginia were the most by the Cavaliers this season. UVa ran for a season high 181 yards and threw for a season-high 243 yards.
Today's game was the biggest comeback against a UVa team since BYU trailed 21-0 at halftime and rallied for a 38-35 overtime victory in 2000 in Charlottesville.
