Al Golden Named Defensive Coordinator

Charlottesville, Va. - Head football coach Al Groh announced Friday the hiring of Al Golden as defensive coordinator. Golden's hiring completes Groh's staff of nine assistant coaches.

The 31-year old Golden comes to Charlottesville from Penn State where he served as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator last season. Prior to that he was the linebackers coach at Boston College for three seasons (1997-99), helping the Eagles to two bowl appearances.

No stranger to UVa, Golden was a graduate assistant on George Welsh's UVa staff from 1994-96, where he worked primarily with the linebackers. He helped develop linebackers James Farrior and Jamie Sharper, who were both selected in the 1997 NFL draft.

He is a 1991 graduate of Penn State, where he was a two-year starter at tight end. Following graduation he spent one season with the New England Patriots. He received a master's degree in sport psychology from UVa in 1997.
