CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia head football coach George Welsh
announced several changes in responsibilities among his assistant coaches
today.
Art Markos, UVa's defensive backfield coach since 1991, has been moved to
wide receivers coach. Markos moved to Charlottesville when Welsh took over
the head coaching reins in 1982 and is the lone remaining member of Welsh's
original staff. He was the defensive line coach from 1982-85, the defensive
ends coach from 1986-88 and the defensive ends/strong safety coach in
1989-90. Markos has coached four All-Americans at UVa, including punter
Will Brice, defensive backs Percy Ellsworth and Anthony Poindexter and
defensive end Ray Savage.
Bob Price, UVa's running backs coach the last three seasons, takes over for
Markos as the defensive backs coach. Among the positions he has held in his
coaching career are a four-year stint as defensive coordinator, secondary
coach and special teams coordinator at Nevada-Las Vegas from 1986-89 and a
year (1990) as the secondary coach at California. He was a secondary coach
for three different teams in the Canadian Football League in the
1990s-Ottawa Roughriders (1991), Saskatchewan Roughriders (1992-93), and
Baltimore Stallions (1994-95). He was the head coach of the CFL's Montreal
Alouettes in 1996 before coming to UVa in 1997.
Andree Powell moves to running backs coach, a position he coached at UVa in
1996, his first in Charlottesville. That season he coached Atlantic Coast
Conference Player of the Year Tiki Barber as Barber led the ACC in rushing
and all-purpose yards. Prior to coming to Virginia, Powell was running
backs coach at several colleges, including VMI (1992), Rhode Island
(1993-94) and Army (1995). He coached Virginia's wide receivers the last
three seasons.
Three other coaches return to the positions they held two years ago. Rick
Lantz, UVa's defensive coordinator since 1991, will coach the linebackers,
while last season's linebackers coach, David Turner, has been assigned to
the defensive tackles. Turner coached the defensive tackles in 1998. Ty
Smith, last season's defensive line coach, will coach the defensive ends, a
position he coached at UVa in 1998.
