Maryland Postgame Notes
Quick Hits: Maryland improved to 7-3 and 4-2 in the ACC with its 42-23 win over Virginia ... the Terrapins record when leading at half this season is 6-1 ... Maryland snapped a three-game losing streak to Virginia ... Maryland's 19-point win is its largest margin of victory in Charlottesville since a 42-10 win in 1986.
Friedgen Wins: Head coach Ralph Friedgen won his 73rd game today, tying him for the third-most victories in school history with Jim Tatum. Curley Byrd is the all-time leader with 119 and Jerry Claiborne is second with 77.
Ground Attack: Maryland's first four touchdowns came on the ground, and all four from freshmen. Quarterback Danny O'Brien had one and running back D.J. Adams had three.
Adams TDs: D.J. Adams ran for three touchdowns against Virginia, becoming the first Maryland player to do that since Lance Ball on 10/6/07 against Georgia Tech. Adams had TD runs of 6, 1 and 2 yards and the freshman now owns the team lead with six rushing TDs of the season. It is the second multiple-TD game of Adams' career (also two vs. Morgan State, 9/11/10). Adams had 13 rushes for 37 yards.
Turnover Battle: Maryland improved to 6-2 in games they win the turnover battle. Eric Franklin and Adrian Moten had each had interceptions, while the Terps didn't commit a turnover. Maryland is now plus-13 in turnovers this season. Franklin is the eighth different Maryland player to record an interception this season. Moten now has six career interceptions (four this season), the second most in school history by a linebacker.
Make it Six: Torrey Smith had over 100 yards receiving with 12 minutes left in second quarter. He finished with a game-high 157 yards on seven receptions. It was the sixth 100-yard receiving game of his career, which is tied for the fourth most in Maryland history (also Vernon Davis). His 12-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter gave him eight on the season, which is tied for the third most in a single season in school history.
More Smith: Torrey Smith had 216 all-purpose yards in the first half (157 receiving, 59 kickoff returns) and now ranks 15th on the ACC career list. The junior has 4,766 all-purpose yards in his career.
Run, Pass and Catch: Danny O'Brien ran for a 12-yard TD early in the second quarter, the first rushing TD of his career. The freshman has thrown, caught and run for a TD this season.
Big Plays: The Terps had two plays over 50 yards against Virginia: a 62-yard pass from Danny O'Brien to Torrey Smith and a 55-yard pass from O'Brien to Quintin McCree. Maryland, which had just eight plays of 50 yards or longer in 2009, now has 16 this season.
O'Brien in Top 15: Danny O'Brien threw for 289 yards and two TDs against Virginia and now has 1,571 yards on the season, which is a Maryland freshman record. It also ranks 15th in ACC history among freshmen.
Tidbits: Quintin McCree's 55-yard reception was the longest of his career ... Alex Wujciak had a team-high 11 tackles ... the Terps have now recorded 22 interceptions over the last 15 games
