Four UVa Football Players Receive Recognition From The Sporting News

Dec. 7, 1999

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Four Virginia football players have received recognition by The Sporting News for their play this season.

Thomas Jones and Noel LaMontagne were named first-team All-Americans by the all sports magazine, while Chris Williams was named to its All-Freshman first team and Jerton Evans to the All-Freshman second team.

For Jones, who set ACC and school records with 1798 yards rushing and 2054 all-purpose yards, this is the fourth All-America team he has been named to, making him a consensus All-American. He is UVa's first consensus All-American back since Bill Dudley in 1941.

LaMontagne, a two-time All-ACC selection, becomes the second UVa offensive lineman named first-team All-America this season. He joins center John St. Clair, who was named to the first team by CollegeFootballNews.com.

Williams, a red-shirt freshman from Newport News, Va., started every game at safety for the Cavaliers this season. He led UVa defensive backs with 69 tackles, while adding two interceptions.

Evans, a true freshman from Lynchburg, Va., played in all 11 games this fall and started the final nine at safety. He led the team with four interceptions to become the first true freshman to lead the team since 1991. Evans was in on 44 tackles this season, second among UVa's defensive backs.

The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 7-4 record, marking the 13th consecutive season they have won seven or more games. They will face Illinois in the Micronpc.com Bowl in Miami, Fla., on Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
