Assistant Coach

John Phillips joined the Virginia men’s golf program in August of 2016 as an assistant coach. In his first season with the Cavaliers, UVA won four tournaments, finished as the runner-up in two other events and placed 10th at the NCAA Championships, the best showing in program history. Senior Jimmy Stanger won the ACC individual title and three Cavaliers earned All-America honors.

Phillips coordinates team travel, assists with administrative duties and recruiting and in player development. He is an Aimpoint Express certified instructor, a Putting Zone certified instructor and a Trackman Level I certified professional.

Prior to joining the UVA staff, Phillips was VCU's full-time assistant coach for three years and served as a volunteer assistant in 2013-14 and a graduate assistant coach in 2012-13.

During his tenure at VCU, the Rams won six tournament titles, had five individual tournament medalists, saw 11 players receive all-conference honors and had six players named All-American Scholars.

As a player, Phillips was a four-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection and guided Bridgewater College to the 2010 ODAC team title and an appearance in that year's NCAA Division III Championship. A two-year captain, Phillips was named a Cleveland/Srixon Academic All-American in 2011 and 2012.

Phillips graduated from Bridgewater with a degree in business administration. He is a product of the VCU Center for Sport Leadership. Phillips received his master's in sport leadership from the program in 2013.
