Marino has started every tournament during his Cavalier career.
Senior Season (Fall 2001): Top Cavalier in two tournaments … finished second at the Mason Rudolph after firing a spectacular 68-67-65-200 (-10) to set the school record for 54 holes… shot a career-low 65 in the final round … tied for ninth at the Tennessee Tournament with a 211 (+1) … fired a 66 in the opening round … averaged 72.53 in the fall.
Junior Season (2000-01): Started every tournament … finished eighth at The Ridges with a 213 (-3) … tied for 15th at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions with a 215 (-1) … averaged 74.21 in the fall … captured medalist honors at the Seminole Intercollegiate with a 70-68-67-205 (-11), helping the Cavaliers to the team title … the eight-stroke lead set the school record for the largest margin of victory for a UVa individual… tied for fourth at the ACC Championship with a 73-70-69-212 (-4) … took eighth at the Cavalier Classic with a 146 … averaged a team-best 72.39 in the spring.
Sophomore Season (1990-00): Played in eight of Virginia’s spring tournaments ... His top finish was at the Furman Intercollegiate where he tied for fifth with a one-over-par 217 (69-76-72) ... Averaged 74.96 ... His 69 in the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate marked his lowest score of the spring ... Tied for 14th at the ACC Championship with a three-over-par 219 (72-76-71) ... Had a very consistent fall season where he finished no higher than tied for 17th in the Cavaliers’ first four tournaments … Had seven rounds at par or below … Finished tied for 10th at the Cavalier Classic with rounds of 75-71-71 (217) … Also broke par in two rounds at the Carpet Classic (70-75-71—216), and finished tied for 17th … Ranked third on the team in scoring average for the Fall with 73.29.
Freshman Season (1998-99): Ranked fourth on the team with a 75.14 year average … Played in all seven spring tournaments … Was low man for the Cavaliers twice in the spring with two top-20 finishes, at the Golf Digest Collegiate and the ACC Championships … Averaged 75.75 for the spring season … Fired three-below par rounds …Played in all five fall tournaments … Tied with Cameron Yancey for second on the team with a 74.33 average … Had four rounds at or below par … Fired a career-low 68 in the second round at the Duke Classic … Tied for third as UVa’s low man at Tennessee’s Tournament of Champions with a 3-under par 213 (70-73-70).
Additional Amateur Highlights—1999: Claimed his biggest victory in golf by winning the Virginia State Amateur Championship … Defeated former State Amateur Champions Allen Barber and Hank Klein on his way to the finals where he beat former State Amateur and State Open Champion Keith Decker 5 & 4 … Also defeated current State Open titlest Faber Jameson in the semi-finals … Runner-up to teammate Mike Mitchell in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Amateur … Shot 76-72-71-77 to finish tied for 56th in the Eastern Amateur. 1998: Tied for sixth at the AJGA Taylor Made Woodlands Junior with a 144 (73-71) … Medalist in Virginia State Amateur Qualifying. 1997: AJGA Honorable Mention All-American ... Won the Bobby Chapman Invitational with a 140 (73-67) ...
