Cavaliers Capture Cleveland Golf Palmetto Crown

Aiken, S.C. - The Virginia men's golf team picked up its first win of the season, taking top honors at the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. Playing in rainy conditions, the Cavaliers shot 9-over 289 on Tuesday for a three-round total of even par 840. Georgia Southern was the runner-up at 849.

Junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) picked up the eighth top-10 finish of his career, leading the Cavaliers with a third-place showing. He shot 3-over 73 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 2-under 208.

Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) posted his best tournament result at UVA, placing fifth at 1-under 209. Senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was the third Cavalier to place in the top-10, finishing seventh at even par 210. Walker shot 72 during the final round while Massie posted as score of 71.

Sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) completed play in 14th place at 214 while classmate Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was 33rd at 219. Poole finished with a 73 while Orischak shot 78.

The Palmetto marked the 13-consecutive season Virginia has won a tournament title. The victory was the 21st for head coach Bowen Sargent, now in his 14th season at Virginia.

The Cavaliers continue their spring break swing through South Carolina this weekend when they compete at the General Hackler Invitational in Myrtle Beach on Saturday and Sunday.
