Aiken, S.C. - Virginia senior All-American Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) picked up the third win of his career as the No. 3 Virginia men’s golf team finished as the runners-up at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.

Bard used a birdie on the 17th hole to break a tie with Clemson’s Doc Redman to capture the title. The two players came to the par-4, 388-yard hole sharing the lead at 3-under when Bard took the lead and Redman dropped back to second with a bogey. Redman tied UVA junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) for second place at 3-under 207. Walker posted a 71 during Tuesday’s play. Walker’s finish was the best of his career and came after he placed third at the John Burns Intercollegiate to open the spring season.

Clemson managed to overtake the Cavaliers during the final round to win the team title by a single stroke at 5-under 835. UVA shot 13-over 293 Tuesday while the Tigers managed a final round score of 9-over 289.

Cavalier sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) placed ninth, his third top-10 finish this season, at 1-over 211. Walsh posted a final round score of 76.

Freshman Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was 18th at 215. Classmate Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) was 69th at 228. He completed play with a 76.

The Cavaliers will continue their spring break trip this weekend when they compete at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach.
