Aiken, S.C. - Behind the second-round score of 6-under 64 by senior Mac McLaughlin, the Virginia men's golf team is tied for third place in the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The tournament is being contested at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. McLaughlin stands atop the leaderboard after the first 36 holes of play at 5-under 135. USC Aiken's Matt Atkins is one shot behind him in second place.

Virginia had team scores of 11-over 291 and 3-over 283 for a first-day total of 574. South Carolina leads the field at 570 followed by NC State at 571. Augusta State is tied with UVa and those two schools have a three-shot advantage over Clemson and Liberty.

McLaughlin's 64 was the lowest round of his career. His previous best single-round score was a 5-under 67 at the VCU Shootout last season. McLaughlin's score was one stroke off the tournament scoring record of 63 set by former Cavalier Ben Kohles in 2010.
