Charlottesville, Va. - Behind the play of individual runner-up Mac McLaughlin, the Virginia men's golf team placed sixth in the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
The Cavaliers shot 19-over 299 during Tuesday's final round for a 54-hole total of 873. Augusta State took home the team championship after finishing at 856, seven strokes ahead of runner-up South Carolina.
Virginia was led by McLaughlin's second-place finish. He shot 2-under 208 to place two shots behind USC Aiken's Matt Atkins. McLaughlin's finish and total score were both career bests. It marked the fourth time he has placed in the top-10 during his career.
UVa's Denny McCarthy was 11th overall at 4-over 214. He finished the tournament by shooting even par 70 on Tuesday. Nick Tremps was 42nd overall at 225, Ji Soo Park was 65th at 231 and Alex Lloyd was 70th at 232.
The Cavaliers wrap up their Spring Break trip by playing in the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. The tournament runs March 15-17.
