Stanger Leads UVa at Schenkel with Fourth-Place Finish

Statesboro, Ga. - The No. 7 Virginia men's golf team finished fourth at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., behind a third-place finish from freshman Jimmy Stanger. It marked the fourth time in five outings this season the Cavaliers have managed at least a fourth-place finish.

The Cavaliers shot 293 during Sunday's final round for a three-day total of 4-over 868. Virginia tied with Texas for fourth place. Host school Georgia Southern won the event at 14-under 850 while UAB was second at 858 and UCF was third at 862.

Stanger shot 1-over 73 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 4-under 212. His finish and tournament score were the best of his career and marked the second top-10 showing for him this season.

Denny McCarthy used a final round 72 to place 20th at 1-over 217. Derek Bard, Ben Rusch and Nick McLaughlin all tied for 40th at 6-over 222. Bard and McLaughlin shot 76 on Sunday, while Rusch finished with a 72. David Pastore, competing as an individual, was 32nd at 221.

Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes won the event at 7-under 209. He was one of three Georgia Southern players to finish in the top four.

The Cavaliers return to play March 23-25 at the Hootie @Bull Bay tournament in Charleston, S.C.
