NEW LONDON, N.C. - The University of Virginia golf team finished seventh today at the annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. This marks the first time since 1994 the Cavaliers failed to finish in the top half of the field.

Georgia Tech shot a blistering 285 this afternoon to claim the team title. The Yellow Jackets entered today's final round with a one-stroke lead over North Carolina but finished 10 strokes ahead of the Tar Heels and Duke with a 54-hole total of 863 (1-under par).

Duke's Matt Krauss took medalist honors with a 4-under par 212. He finished one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech's Mike Pearson and two strokes ahead of Pearson's teammate, Wes Latimer.

Freshman Steve Marino was the Cavaliers' top finisher in his best performance since the Golf Digest Collegiate last month. He finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 7-over par 223.

Marino was followed closely by Mike Mitchell who finished in a tie for 26th place with a 10-over 226. Cameron Yancey finished tied for 29th with a 227, while James Driscoll finished tied for 32nd at 230. Shep Stevens finished 45th with a 256.

Virginia returns to action next weekend at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
