CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
The Virginia men's golf team shot rounds of 288 (E) and 300 (+12) on the first day of its own Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic at Birdwood Golf Course on Friday. This is the 17th year the Cavaliers have hosted the event.
Furman is leading the 11-team field after a day one score of three-under 573. UNC-Wilmington shot a 577 (+1) to grab second place. First-round leader North Carolina fell to third at 578 (+2). The Cavaliers are in fifth place after a total score of 588 (+12).
"We saw great play today from a lot of players," said Virginia head coach Mike Moraghan. "Furman is one of the hottest teams in the country right now. They won their conference championship last week. There?s really no surprise that they're leading after two rounds."
Furman's T.J. Blandford and the Italian National Team's Andrea Signor are the co-leaders after two rounds with a five-under 139 each. Blandford shot the low round of the day, 67 (-5), in the afternoon round. North Carolina?s Dustin Bray is in third at 140 (-4).
Cavalier freshman Daniel McGurk (Woodlands, Texas) is tied for 12th place at 145 (+1). Sophomore Eamonn McLoughlin (Amityville, N.Y.) is tied for 18th after a two-round score of 147 (+3). Sophomore Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) shot the team's low round of the day with a two-under 70 in the morning round, but fell to 147 (+3) and a tie for 18th place by the end of the day. Junior Kevin O'Connell (Potomac, Md.) is tied for 27th at 150 (+6), while senior Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) is tied for 39th at 153 (+9).
Playing for the Cavaliers as individuals, sophomore John Fizer (Trenton, NJ) is tied for 27th at 150 (+6), while sophomore Craig Cook-Stevenson (Sutton-Coldfield, Eng.) is tied for 36th at 152 (+8). Freshman Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) shot 153 (+9) to tie for 39th. Junior Michael Standiford (Fairfax Station, Va.) is tied for 55th at 159 (+15). Freshman William Byrd is in 58th place at 161 (+17).
"Naturally we're a little disappointed that we played poorly in the afternoon," Moraghan said of the Cavaliers. "There's some great golf being played. We're happy that the Italian National Team is very competitive. They have one player who's five-under for the tournament and playing very well. It's been a great event so far."
The final round will tee off Saturday at 8 a.m. at Birdwood Golf Course. Admission to the event is free.
