McCarthy's 68 Helps UVa Improve to Fifth Place at ACC Golf Championships

New London, N.C. - The Virginia men's golf team turned in its best single-round score of the year to move up to fifth place after 36 holes of play at the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. With four players breaking par, the Cavaliers shot 9-under 279 for a two-day total of 10-under 566. No. 14 Florida State shot 8-under 280 and leads the field at 25-under 551 heading into Sunday's final round.

No. 9 Duke used a second-round score of 15-under 273 to move within four shots of the Seminoles at 21-under 555. No. 7 Georgia Tech had the day's best score, shooting 16-under 272, to climb to third place at 556.

Virginia was led during the second round by sophomore Denny McCarthy who shot 4-under 68. He moved up to 13th place with a two-day total of 3-under 141. McCarthy had five birdies and one bogey during his round.

The Cavaliers have three players tied for 19th place at 1-under 143. Mac McLaughlin used an eagle on his fourth hole to shoot 2-under 70 during Saturday's play. Nick Tremps posted a score of 1-under 71 and David Pastore shot 2-over 74.

Ji Soo Park shot 2-under 70 and improved to 26th overall at even par 144.

Georgia Tech's Anders Albertson will take a two-shot lead into the final round in the hunt for individual honors. He stands at 11-under 133, which is two strokes ahead of Florida State's Chase Seiffert.

The tournament wraps up Sunday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is online at will broadcast a free webcast of the final found with coverage starting at 2:30 p.m.
