May 29, 2013

Atlanta, Ga. - Virginia sophomore golfer Denny McCarthy moved up 36 places on the leaderboard following the second round of play at the NCAA Championships being held at the Capital City Club in Atlanta. McCarthy shot 3-under 67 Wednesday for a two-day total of 1-under 139 on the par-70 course.

McCarthy started his round from the 10th tee and made a par and bogey before reeling off five birdies over his next 12 holes. He carded a bogey on his final hole to finish the day at 3-under.

Arizona State freshman Jon Rahm continues to lead the 156-player field. He shot 2-over 72, but thanks to his opening round 61, he heads into Friday's final round at 7-under 133.

Host school Georgia Tech took over the team lead at 12-under 548. Top-ranked California is second at 549 and No. 4 Texas is third at 550.

Friday's final round will determine the event's individual champion and the top eight teams at the conclusion of stroke play will advance to the match play portion of the tournament.
