Poole Leads UVA Golfers at Northern Intercollegiate

Sugar Grove, Ill. - The Virginia men’s golf team is in second place after 36 holes of play at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. UVA had rounds up to 277 and 291 to finish the first day at 8-under, 568. Marquette leads the 12-team field at 546.

The Cavaliers were led on the first day of play by redshirt sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.). He shot a career best 7-under 65 during the first round and followed that up with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. His opening round included eight birdies and an eagle. Poole ended the day in second place at 9-under 135. Marquette’s Oliver Farrell leads the field at 13-under 131.

Junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) is in 13th place at 2-under 142. He posted rounds of 68 and 74. Senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is 19th at even par 144. He shot 71 and 73. Sophomore Andrew Orischak is 33nd at 147. He had rounds of 73 and 74. Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.), making his collegiate debut, shot 75 and 79 and is 62nd at 154. Fellow freshman WeiWei Gao (Cebu, Philippines) was also playing in his first college tournament. Competing as an individual, he is 51st at 150.

The third round of the tournament is set for Monday. UVA will tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. from the first tee while playing with Marquette and Purdue. Live scoring is online at
