Alpharetta, Ga. - Virginia senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) battled through windy conditions to shoot 5-under 67 and grab the first-round lead at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. Virginia completed the round at 1-over 289 and was in third place. Oklahoma finished as the opening round leader at 5-under 283.
Following birdies on his eighth and ninth holes, Stanger made the turn at 1-under par and then posted four birdies and five pars during his back nine to claim the early lead.
Stanger’s appearance atop the leaderboard marked the sixth time in the last seven rounds of the tournament a UVA player has led the event.
Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) entered the tournament after posting back-to-back first-place finishes in 2014 and 2015. He shot 2-over 74 and is tied for 30th along with teammates Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.). Sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) posted a round of 75 and is in 43rd place.
