Tallahassee, FL Virginia senior golfer Conrad Von Borsig turned in his best single-round performance since last April to help the Cavaliers stand second after the opening round of play at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate. Virginia shot 1-over 289 at the 12-team tournament to finish Friday’s play one shot behind No. 28 Mississippi. Vanderbilt is third at 290 while the host Seminoles are tied with Mississippi State for fourth at 292. Arkansas, the event’s top-ranked team at No. 18, is in eighth place at 296.

Starting on the 10th hole, Von Borsig had three straight birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15, but dropped back to 1-under after back-to-back bogeys on his next two holes. He used an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to make the turn at 3-under. He managed three more birdies on the front side of the Golden Eagle Country Club course to improve to 6-under before finishing with two bogeys. His 4-under 68 equaled the best round he has posted during his Virginia career and marks the fourth consecutive season he has posted the score.

Von Borsig finished the day one shot behind co-leaders Joe David of Mississippi and Ryan Haselden of Vanderbilt. Virginia’s Steven Rojas also played his way into the top 10 by turning in a 72 that tied him for 10th. Last year Rojas led UVa at the tournament with a fifth-place finish.

Will Collins is in 20th place at 2-over 74. Ben Kohles and Kyle Stough are tied for 26th at 75. Cole Willcox, playing as a non-scoring individual, also shot 75.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
