Cavalier Golfer Ties Course Record

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - University of Virginia golfer Mike Mitchell shot an eight-under par 63 at the Keswick Club in Keswick, Va., Tuesday to tie the course record held jointly by PGA Tour veteran Hal Sutton and former UVa golfer Lewis Chitengwa.

Mitchell, a sophomore from Chevy Chase, Md., parred the first five holes, birdied the sixth, bogeyed the seventh, birdied the eighth and parred the ninth for a front nine total of 35, 1 under par. He then made six straight birdies on holes 10-15 and added another birdie at 17. Mitchell parred the 18th hole to tie the 18-hole record, and set a new back nine record with a 7-under par 28. He was playing with teammates Cameron Yancey of Blackstone, Va., and Steve Marino of Fairfax, Va.

Mitchell is coming off his best tournament performance of the spring season, a 21st place finish at the Golf Digest Invitational. Mitchell and the Cavalier golfers resume action this weekend at the Chris Schenkel EZ-GO Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
