Davis Finishes 21st at Sunnehanna Amateur

Johnstown, PA Virginia freshman golfer Amory Davis tied for 21st at the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions in Johnstown, Pa. The tournament was held at the Sunnehanna Country Club from June 5-8.

Davis completed the 72-hole event at 6-over 286. He had rounds of 69, 75, 73 and 69 on the par-70 course. The field for this year’s tournament included 69 players from around the world. Oklahoma State’s Rickie Fowler took medalist honors at 8-under 272. He also won the tournament in 2007.

Considered one of the nation’s top amateur events, the tournament was founded in 1954. The Sunnehanna Amateur was the first country club sponsored 72-hole stroke play competition for amateurs in the United States. Past champions include Scott Verplank, Brad Faxon, Bobby Clampett, Ben Crenshaw and Howard Twitty. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and a number of current PGA Tour members played the event while amateurs.

Davis recently won a U.S. Open local qualifier and finished third at his sectional qualifier. He is one of eight alternates for the 2008 U.S. Open. He was part of UVa’s five-man roster that finished 26th at the NCAA Championships.
