Stanger and Sargent Top VaSID Golf Honors

June 23, 2017

Virginia senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and Cavalier head coach Bowen Sargent were the recipients of the top honors when the 2017 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf team was released today by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).

Stanger was named the VaSID Men’s Golfer of the Year, while Sargent was selected the VaSID Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the third season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career in Charlottesville. He received the same honor in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016.

Liberty freshman Kieran Vincent was tabbed the VaSID Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year.

Stanger earned PING/GCAA All-America first-team honors during his final season with the Cavaliers, becoming the first player in program history to be a first-team selection.

The 2017 ACC individual champion placed 11th at the NCAA Championships and led the Cavaliers with a 70.82 stroke average and posted six top-10 finishes in 11 events.

Stanger is the second Virginia player in program history to be named the VaSID Men’s Golfer of the Year, joining Denny McCarthy who received the same honor in 2014.

Sargent led the Cavaliers to a 10th-place finish at the NCAAs, the best finish at the national championship in Virginia program history. The Cavaliers missed advancing to the match play portion of the event by two strokes.

Virginia finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 13 in the final Golfstat national rankings, a ranking bolstered by the Cavaliers winning four of their first five events of the 2016-17 season.

Joining Stanger on the VaSID all-state team was senior Derek Bard (New Hardford, N.Y.).

A total of six University Division programs in Virginia were represented on the 2017 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf first and second teams. Liberty, Virginia and Virginia Tech each had multiple selections on the all-state listings, while George Mason, James Madison and Radford had one golfer named to the all-state teams.
