Charlottesville, Va. - Virginia head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent has been named Coach of the Year by the Virginia State Golf Coaches Association. The All-State first team included Cavaliers Derek Bard (Virginia), Jimmy Stanger (Virginia) and Thomas Walsh. They were joined on the first team by Ryan Cole (James Madison) and Mark Lawrence, Jr. (Virginia Tech).
Virginia finished sixth or better in 10 of 13 events during the 2016-17 regular season, including four victories and two runner-up performances. The Cavaliers finished sixth at the ACC Championships and a program-best 10th-place showing at the NCAA Championships. UVA was ranked No. 12 by Golfstat and No. 17 by Golfweek/Sagarin at the end of the season.
Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the PING All-America first team, in addition to earning All-ACC and All-East Region honors. He led the Cavaliers with a 70.94 stroke average and was recognized as the Men’s Golf ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2016-17 season. Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted a 71.44 stroke average and was named to the All-ACC team, Division I All-East Region team and an honorable mention All-American. He won the Palmetto Intercollegiate and had three additional top-10 finishes during the season. Walsh (High Point, N.C.) competed in every event for the Cavaliers and was third on the team in scoring with a 72.54 average. He was also named an honorable mention All-American.
UVA junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was selected to the All-State second team. He was joined by Mickey DeMorat (Liberty), Keegan Hoff (Richmond), Isaiah Logue (Liberty) and Sarit Suwannarut (Virginia Tech).
