Kefale Advances to U.S. Amateur Championship

Aug. 3, 2006

Charlottesville, VA - Virginia sophomore men's golfer Daniel Kefale qualified for the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship recently by earning co-medalist honors at a qualifying tournament held at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. Kefale (Woodbridge) shot rounds of 69 and 68 for a 36-hole total of 7-under 137.

Kefale was the only golfer in the field to post two round in the 60s, recording five birdies and a bogey in second round action to qualify for his first U.S. Am. This will be his second national championship, having also competed in the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club, the same year he won the State Junior and was named the VSGA's junior boy of the year.

The national championship will be played from Aug. 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

The U.S. Amateur Championship is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

Kefale was recognized in the current issue of Golfweek as one of 12 black players (six male, six female) at the junior and college ranks as top African-American prospects. The list was generated as part of a feature story on Tiger Woods impact on golf.
