Charlottesville, Va. - The seventh-ranked Virginia men’s golf team wraps up its fall season this weekend at the 11th annual Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (formerly the United States Collegiate Championship) in Alpharetta. The 54-hole event begins on Friday, Oct. 21, and continues with round two Saturday morning and concludes with the final round Sunday.
This year the tournament will use both the Lakeside Course (par 72, 7,017 yards) and Creekside Course (par 72, 7,039 yards). Both courses will be utilized Friday and Saturday, with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. on the first tee. On Sunday, all 17 teams and individuals will play the Lakeside Course, beginning at 8 a.m. on the first and 10th tees.
Virginia senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) has placed first at the event in his last two appearances. He was the outright winner in 2014 at 15-under 201, and was co-champion last year when he shot 6-under 210. Virginia placed 10th at last year’s tournament and was the runner-up in 2014.
The Cavaliers have picked up two wins in three outings this season. UVA took top honors at the Carpet Capital Collegiate to open its season and placed first at last weekend’s Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The field is traditionally one of the strongest in college golf, and 14 of the 17 teams this year are in the current Golfstat top 50. Six of those are ranked among the top 10, with four others in the top 25. Auburn and Wake Forest are back to defend their 2015 shared title, and all four co-medalists from 2015 are back as well. Twelve of the nation's current top 25 players, according to Golfstat, are in the field.
The field, in alphabetical order with current Golfstat ranking -- Auburn (3), Clemson (16), Duke (26), East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech (31), LSU (6), Oklahoma (8), Oklahoma State (2), Southern California (19), Stanford (13), Texas (28), Texas A&M (21), TCU, UCLA (33), Villanova, Virginia (7) and Wake Forest (9).
