UVA Men’s Golf Signing Class Features Two Top Juniors

Charlottesville, Va. - Virginia men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent announced today the signing of a two-man recruiting class of top junior golfers who will join the Cavalier program next fall. The class includes David Morgan of Naples, Fla., and Jack Montague of Manakin-Sabot, Va.

“We are honored to have attracted two, quality young men in David and Jack,” Sargent said. “Both have a strong desire to achieve academic and athletic success during their four years at UVA. Each will arrive in Charlottesville with success at the junior golf and men’s amateur level and that will serve them well as they start competing next fall. We appreciate David and Jack’s passion for the University and our golf program, we would like to thank them for having confidence in our staff, athletic department and university to further their educational and athletic goals.”

Morgan is the No. 40 golfer (65th overall) in the Class of 2018 according to Junior Golf Scoreboard. Golfweek ranks him No. 27 for his class and 59th overall in its Boys Golf rankings.

The Naples Daily News Boy Golfer of the Year in 2016, this week Morgan won the Florida Class 1A District 18 Championship while competing for Seacrest Country Day. Last year he tied for fifth in the Class 1A state championship tournament.

Morgan reached the match play portion of the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after finishing 33rd in stroke play. This year he placed 23rd at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook, was 36th at the Scott Robertson Memorial and tied for second at the Kenridge Invitational. A year ago, he placed 23rd at the Jones Cup Invitational.

Montague had a stellar season in 2017 in some of the mid-Atlantics’s top amateur events. He won the 2017 Richmond Golf Association Amateur Championship. He reached the semifinals of 2017 VSGA Junior Match Play Championship, tied for 17th at the State Open of Virginia, was eighth the VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship and finished fifth at the First Tee of Greater Baltimore Junior Championship.



In 2016, he was third at the MAPGA/VSGA Jr. Four-Ball Championship, 10th at the Mercedes-Benz Of Greensboro Junior Amateur and fourth at the UNC-Duke ACC Junior Amateur. In 2015, he won the 2015 UNC Tarheel State Junior Championship.

The 2017 VISAA co-player of the year, in May he was co-medalist at the VISAA championships while competing for Richmond’s Collegiate School.
