Men's Lacrosse Prepares For ACC Tournament
HEAD COACH: Dom Starsia (Brown '74) is in his fifth season at Virginia.
CURRENT RECORD: Starsia's UVa mark stands at 55-18.
1997 RECORD: UVa is 8-2, 3-0 ACC.
LAST WEEK: Virginia played Duke (17-14 won).
THIS WEEK: This week, UVa hosts the ACC Tournament (Fri., Apr. 18, semifinals, 6:00 PM, 8:30
PM) and Sun., Apr. 20, 3:30 PM , all at Klockner Stadium. Maryland plays Duke in
the 6 PM game, while UVa and UNC face off in the second game.
NOTES: UVa leads the Duke series (38-12, including 2-1 in the ACC Tournament). UVa leads UNC 31-22 and trails 5-0 in the Tournament. UVa trails Maryland 35-24 overall and 2-1 in the Tournament. UVa is 3-8 overall in the Tournament. UVa has never won the tournament. This is UVa's fourth time as host (3-3 at home). Last year UVa topped Maryland 13-9 in the semifinals but lost 13-11 to UNC in the finals.
The Cavaliers are 6-0 at home this season.
UVa's win over Duke last weekend was the 400th for the program (64th season, 400- 268-6, 59.8%.
Several UVa players are in UVa charts now. Doug Knight has now set the UVa
career goal mark (153). The old mark was held by Kevin Pehlke in 1993. The 153 goals puts him fourth in the ACC. He became the seventh player in UVa history to top 200 points (153+78=231). His six assists against UMass is a career high for him. Michael Watson now has 134 goals (third). Knight 231 (third) and Watson (225, fourth ) are now on the UVa career points top five. Watson is also seventh in career assists, UVa, with 91. Knight is ninth (78).
UVa has now scored in double figures for the 41st straight time, a school mark.
Rookie Jason Hard (Cicero/North Syracuse HS) has made a big impression already.
He has won 132 of 205 faceoffs (64.4 %). He also leads the team in ground balls with 70. Another rookie, Drew McKnight (Norfolk Academy) has made some big numbers also, 17 goals and 15 assists in ten games, and the game winner vs.
Maryland in overtime. Rookie Jay Jalbert had a career high (3+3=6) game against Duke, for which he was named ACC Player of the Week.
Mark Murphy (4+4=8 vs. VMI) and Doug Knight (3+5=8 vs. UNC) have had the big point games of the season. Goalie Chris Sanderson (12 saves, 3 goals allowed vs. UNC in 50 minutes of play) earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
UVa's last regular season game is at Bucknell (Sat., Apr. 26, 1:00 PM).
