UVa Picked for NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The NCAA Men's Lacrosse Committee
anounced today that the University of Virginia (11-2 record) has been
chosen for the 21st overall time and the fifth consecutive time for the
1997 Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Cavaliers are seeded second and
will receive a bye in the first round of the 27th NCAA Men's Lacrosse
Championships.
UVa will meet the winner of Georgetown vs. Maryland(Sunday, May
11, at Towson St.) for the right to play in the quarterfinal round of
the 12-team tournament at the University of Maryland at College Park,
Sunday, May 18. UVa has played Maryland (won 15-14 two overtimes)
during the 1997 season and is 5-2 vs. the Tournament field.
UVa is 21-19 in 20 previous tournament's games(7-4 under coach Dom
Starsia, includng three semifinal round appearances and two
finals(including a 13-12 overtime loss to Princeton at Maryland in
1996). Only Maryland(22) and Johns Hopkins(26) have appeared in more
tournaments.
The first round games are at Army(Massachusetts(8, 8-5) vs,
Hofstra(9-5) and Duke(5, 10-3 vs Brown(8-6) and at Towson St.(Loyola 6,
9-3) vs. Notre Dame( 9-2) and Georgetown(7, 9-4) vs. Maryland(8-4).. The
Duke-Brown winner will go to Maryland to play Johns Hopkins(4,10-3).
The UMass-Hofstra winner will advance to Hofstra to play Princeton(1,
11-0). The Loyola-Notre Dame winner advances to Hofstra to play
Syracuse(3, 10-2). The Georgetown-Maryland winner advances to Maryland
to play Virginia(2, 11-2).
First round games are May 10-11, and the quarterfinals will be
played May 17-18. UVa's game will be Sunday, May 18, at 3:45 PM at
Maryland.
The semifinals and finals are at Maryland, May 24 and May 26.
