Virginia Men's and Women's Lacrosse Teams Head for NCAA Tournament
The Virginia men's and women's lacrosse teams, both ranked second in their
respective polls, were selected to participate in the 1997 NCAA Tournament.
The UVa men (11-2) were seeded second in NCAA Tournament and will receive a
first round bye. UVa was selected for an NCAA bid for the 21st time. Only
Maryland (22nd) and Johns Hopkins (26th) have received more bids. UVa has a
first round bye for the second year in a row. UVa will play the winner of
Georgetown vs. Maryland, Sunday,
May 18, at 3:45 PM, at Maryland. Maryland plays Georgetown, May 11, at
Towson St. The winner of the UVa game plays in the semifinals at Maryland
in the NCAA Championships, May 24. The finals are May 26, at Maryland. UVa
beat Maryland in the regular season (UVA 15-14 2 OT at home).
UVa trails the series with Maryland 35-24, with the last two games being
wins. UVa
has never played Georgetown before. UVa is 0-2 in NCAA play vs. Maryland.
UVa is 3-4 in NCAA games at College Park.
The UVa women (14-4) were seeded third in the Tournament and will host
sixth-seeded North Carolina on Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m. in Klockner
Stadium. Virginia has won more tournament games (8) in the 1990's than any
other team and have advanced to the title game three times this decade. The
Cavaliers have hosted a first-round game three of the last five years and
have received a bye into the final four once in that time. The Cavaliers
have faced six of the seven other teams in the tournament and 4-4 versus
the field.
The Women's Lacrosse Tournament semifinals and championship game will be
played at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. on May 17-18.
