John Walker enters his fourth season as an assistant coach on Dom Starsia's coaching staff where he serves as the defensive coordinator.
In his three seasons on Grounds, Walker worked with the goalies and the faceoff crew. Under Walker in 2010, goalie Adam Ghitelman ranked No. 7 in the nation with an 8.25 goals-against average, while UVa played 14 of its 18 games against squads ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring. In 2011 Ghitelman became the ACC's all-time goalie winner with 50 career triumphs in between the pipes, also good for No. 3 all-time in NCAA history.
After sitting on the bench for three season behind Ghitelman, Rob Fortunato emerged in the cage during the 2012 season. Fortunato earned All-American honors while ranking No. 11 in the nation in save percentage (.567) and No. 13 in goals against average (8.5).
In Walker's three seasons at UVa, he has seen his defense gain nine different All-America honors, including two-time All-American Chris LaPierre as a defensive midfielder. During that span each of his goalies have earned All-America honors, highlighted by Ghitelman's nods in 2010 and 2011.
Walker also guided Matt Lovejoy, a second-team All-American in 2012, a defenseman that Starsia said "may be one of, if not the best, team defenders Virginia has had since 1993."
Walker came to Charlottesville after three years as the associate head lacrosse coach at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) in New Jersey where he coached some of the most successful teams in USMAPS history. He is also a co-founder and program director of Winning Edge Lacrosse, which mentored many New Jersey high school players in their offensive development.
Walker was a three-time All-American as an attackman at the United States Military Academy (Army) and finished as the school's second all-time leading scorer with 209 points. He helped lead the team to three NCAA Championship appearances as well as a Patriot League title and was a team captain as a senior in 2006. He graduated in 2006 with a degree in law and legal systems.
Walker is the son of Wesley Walker, a two-time All-Pro wide receiver during a 13-year playing career for the New York Jets. Walker's younger brother Austin was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Johns Hopkins.
The native of Dix Hills, N.Y., currently resides in Charlottesville.
