Charlottesville, Va. - The Virginia men's lacrosse team outscored Drexel 8-0 in the second quarter to seize control and gain a 16-7 win over the Dragons in the season opener for both teams this afternoon at the UHall Turf Field.

Junior attackman Matt Ward led the way for Virginia with five goals, while junior midfielder Matt Poskay added a career-high four goals. Junior midfielder Kyle Dixon and freshman attackman Ben Rubeor each scored once and tallied three assists. Overall seven different Cavaliers scored goals in a balanced offensive effort.

Drew Thompson put UVa on top early, but Drexel midfielder Greg Dougherty tied it a short time later as the teams traded goals in the opening 15 minutes. Drexel's Mike Filippone answered a Poskay goal to knot the score at two with 7:12 remaining in the opening quarter, but the goal was his team's last for more than 26 minutes. The Cavaliers were flagged for three penalties in the first quarter, but Drexel was unable to take advantage.

Ward opened the second quarter with the first of his two goals in the period in an extra-man situation to start UVa's 8-goal run that eventually grew to a 10-2 halftime bulge. Rubeor followed with his first collegiate goal in a man-down situation, while Dixon made Drexel pay with UVa's second EMO goal of the quarter. Junior midfielder Jared Little scored twice during the run, while Poskay and defenseman Steve Holmes also scored once. Virginia peppered sophomore goalie Bryan Maggio, making his first career start between the pipes, with 18 shots in the period.

Ward scored his third of the afternoon early in the third quarter to stretch the run to nine consecutive goals, but Drexel ended a long scoring drought with back-to-back goals by Chris O'Connor and Pat Simpson. The teams traded goals for the next 16-and-a-half minutes as UVa's lead alternated between seven and eight goals, but the visitors from Philadelphia could get no closer. Ward scored twice in the fourth quarter and Thompson got his second to close UVa's scoring as the lead reached double digits at 16-6. Sean Moloney scored Drexel's final goal with 2:43 left.

Sophomore Kip Turner, also making his first career start in the cage for the Cavaliers, recorded three saves while playing the opening half. Redshirt freshman Bud Petit took over after halftime and finished with three saves.

Senior midfielder Pat Simpson was Drexel's leading scorer, tying his career-high with two goals. Filippone won 13 of 24 faceoffs, scored a goal and added an assist. Maggio finished with a career-high 13 saves.

The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday (Feb. 26) against Manhattan at 1 pm.
