Charlottesville, Va. - The Virginia men's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the opening six minutes of the game en route a 20-0 win over VMI tonight at Klöckner Stadium.
Nine different Cavaliers scored as UVa posted its first shutout since blanking Ohio State 21-0 in 1999. The win is the eighth-ranked Cavaliers' third in a row as they improve to 3-1 overall this season, while the Keydets fall to 1-2.
Virginia scored on six of its first nine shots of the game to take control of the contest. The lead grew to 7-0 before the Keydets were able to take their first shot of the game at the 6:21 mark of the first quarter.
Ben Rubeor tied his career high with five goals, all in the first quarter. Danny Glading scored four times and added an assist in the opening 15 minutes as UVa built an 11-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Virginia head coach Dom Starsia began substituting frequently in the second quarter and rested his starters for the remainder of the game. Junior Ryan Kelly scored both of his goals in the second quarter as the Cavaliers took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Cavalier reserves scored five times in the third quarter, including two goals by freshman Tim Fuchs.
Sophomore Gavin Gill, playing in just his second game after returning to action with a foot injury, scored three times, his first career multi-goal game, and had an assist while playing the final three quarters.
All 37 available players saw action for the Cavaliers.
Faceoff specialist Adam Fassnacht won eight of nine faceoffs to help Virginia dominate possession during the early stages of the game. Overall, the Cavaliers won 17 of 24 draws.
Kip Turner started in goal for the Cavaliers and played nearly 22 minutes with one save before being relieved by Bud Petit. Petit played the remainder of the first half and started the second half, but did not have a save. Mark Wade recorded one save in just over 13 minutes, while Rob Eimer, making his first college appearance, played the final five minutes and 54 seconds and had two saves.
For the game, the Cavaliers outshot the Keydets 54-12.
The Cavaliers return to action this Saturday (March 10) when they host seventh-ranked Princeton at Klöckner Stadium at 1 pm.
