CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia (3-0) men's lacrosse team, ranked No. 6 this week in the USILA coaches and the Inside Lacrosse/Maverik media polls returns home on Saturday to face the Princeton Tigers (1-0). Princeton is ranked No. 18 in the media poll and receiving votes in the coaches poll. The game will be contested at Klöckner Stadium and faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Sunday marks the 25th all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Tigers, and the first since 2012 NCAA Tournament’s First Round at Klöckner Stadium. UVA leads the all-time series 14-10. The Cavaliers and the Tigers are renewing an old rivalry from the 1990s and 2000s. The two storied programs met in the regular season every year from 1993-2008. UVA has had some epic matchups in the NCAA Tournament as well, as UVA lost in the NCAA title game to Princeton in 1994 and 1996, while losing in the semifinal round in 2000.
Michael Kraus leads UVA with 11 total points on six goals and five assists. Ian Laviano owns the team lead with nine goals, while Dox Aitken has scored eight times. Mikey Herring leads the team with seven assists, while Justin Schwenk has picked up a team-high 21 ground balls while winning 63.5 percent (47-of-74) of his faceoffs. Goalie Griffin Thompson has started all three games between the pipes and is saving 48 percent of shots and has posted an 11.41 goals against average. Alex Rode made his collegiate debut at High Point, picking up the win. Rode is saving 64.7 percent of shots and is posting a 7.58 goals against average.
Princeton comes to Klöckner on Saturday with a 1-0 record after beating Monmouth in two overtimes last week, 9-8. Head Coach Matt Madalon is in his second full season as the head coach at Princeton. He was named the interim head coach with six games remaining during the 2016 season and was elevated to the position full time following the season. The Tigers are led by Chris Brown and his five points on two goals and three assists. Michael Sowers also has three assists to go with his four points. Phillip Robertson rounds out the top scorers with a team-best three goals. Goalie Tyler Blaisdell is saving 68 percent of shots he is seeing and posting a 7.31 goals against average.

Virginia returns to action when the Cavaliers open ACC play on Sunday, March 4 against the Syracuse Orange. The ACC opener for both teams will be contested at Klöckner Stadium and faceoff is set for 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
