CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday as the Cavaliers (4-1) open up ACC play against the Syracuse Orange (2-1) at the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is set for noon. UVA is ranked No. 11 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 9 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick media poll. The Orange are tied for No. 12 in the coaches poll and ranked No. 10 in the media poll.
The Cavaliers and Orange are meeting for the 33rd time in series history, but are playing each other for only the fourth time as part of ACC play. Virginia has won nine of the last 14 regular-season meetings, but three of the five losses have come at the Carrier Dome (2011, 2013, 2015). The all-time series is as even as it comes, tied 16-16, while each team has scored 416 goals against each other over the course of the previous 32 meetings. These two programs won four combined NCAA titles between 2006-11.
Virginia lost the last two meetings with the Orange, including a narrow 14-13 setback at Klöckner Stadium in 2016. The last time these teams met in the Carrier Dome, the Orange cruised to a 15-9 triumph.
Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Zed Williams leads UVA with 15 assists and 25 points. Sharing the team lead in ground balls with 24 (Jared Conners), Williams is the only player in the nation with at least 20 points and 20 ground balls. Dox Aitken leads UVA with 16 goals, while Mike D’Amario rounds out the top scorers with 14 goals and 18 points. Goalie Will Railey is No. 2 in the ACC with 8.8 saves per game and is posting a 11.98 goals against average between the pipes. He is also saving 48.4 percent of shots against him.
Syracuse head coach John Desko is in his 19th year at Syracuse, where the Orange have won five NCAA national championships under his direction. Nick Mariano leads the Orange with 13 points (seven goals, six assists). Brendan Bomberry has the team lead with eight goals, while Jordan Evans is tied with Bomberry for No. 2 on the team with 12 points. Sergio Salcido rounds out the top scorers with a team-high eight assists and 11 points. Evan Molloy is saving 50.9 percent of shots he has seen in goal, while posting a 9.94 goals against average.
UVA's next game will be their first-ever in the state of California. The Cavaliers will play Cornell on Saturday, March 11 in the Pacific Coast Shootout in Costa Mesa, Calif. Faceoff is set for 9 p.m. ET.
