HEAD COACH: Dom Starsia(Brown '74) enters his sixth season at Virginia.
CURRENT RECORD: Starsia's UVa mark stands at 60-20. [Career: 161-66].
1998 RECORD: 2-1. UVa finished its 1997 season at 11-3, 0-0 ACC.
LAST WEEK: UVa played Mercyhurst (17-2 won) and Princeton(9-7 won).
THIS WEEK: UVa hosts Penn.(tomorrow) and travels to UMass(Sat., Mar. 14, Noon, away).
THE SERIES: UVa leads the Mercyhurst series 2-0. UVa trails the Princeton series 7-5.
UVa trails the Penn series, 2-1. Last year, the two teams met for the first time since 1931. UVa is 1-2 at home.
UVa leads the UMass series, 7-0, including 5-0 at home. The last UVa win was16-10 here last March. The last game away from Charlottesville was in 1996 at Gilman in Baltimore, a15-9 win.
THE RATINGS: In this week's ratings, UVa is third, while UMass is 12th.
NOTES: UVa has been subjected to an unusual early-season rash of injuries. Starters Drew McKnight(A), Hanley Holcomb(M), Henry Oakey(M), and Ryan Curtis(D) have had to sit down for injury or sick time, and reserve David Bruce(expected to be the fourth arttackman) was most severely injured. He may have to miss the whole season. McKnight, Curtis, and Oakey played vs.Princeton. David Wren is also now out (illness).
This is UVa's do a new thing week for the year. UVa has never played a regular season game in New England(one playoff game, Yale, 1988, but no regular season games. UVa is now 30-17 vs. IVY foes(plus Penn) and 35-6 vs. New England teams.
This is year One of the post-Doug Knight, Michael Watson, Tim Whiteley era. Knight(1997 grad, 165+84=249), Watson(1997 grad, 142+98=240), and Whiteley(1996 grad, 85+144=244) leave behind a huge void, but the Cavaliers have been working hard on alternatives.
Top returning players are David Wren(4th, M, 2nd AA, All ACC, 26+6=32); Drew Melchionni(4th, M, HM AA in 1996 and 1997, 12+7=19); Drew McKnight(2nd, A, 22+20=42); Jay Jalbert(2nd, M-A, 19+4=23; Tucker Radebaugh(3rd, A-M, HM AA, 24+11=35); Jason Hard(2nd, M, ACC Rookie, 5+0=5, 176 of 285 faceoffs); and Chris Sanderson(4th, G, Canadian World Games Team, 146 saves, 118 goals allowed).
New starters for 1998 are Jalbert, and Radebaugh on attack; midfielders Wren, Henry Oakey(back from 1996), and Michael Leahy , Ryan Curtis(2nd, D, Potomac, MD), and John Harvey(1st, D, St. George's School)on defense. The Princeton win was UVa's first such win(beating a top-ranked team) at home since 1993(UNC), but it was also the most recent visit by a number one team.
